Dora Jean Byerly

Dora Jean Byerly, 63, of Pinon Hills, CA, went to be with her Lord on April 8, 2012. Mrs. Byerly was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on November 24, 1948, to Louis M. and Mae Chriss. She passed after a thirteen year battle with cancer. Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Dr. Steven Byerly; her son, Dr. David Byerly and wife, Andrea; son, Reverend John Byerly and wife, Jamie; grandsons, Joshua, Caleb, William, Benjamin, James and John-Joseph. At two weeks of age, Mrs. Byerly became the youngest person to cross the Atlantic by air. She and her mother flew on a DC-3 from New York to the Middle East, finally arriving at Bahrain Island on the Persian Gulf where her father was employed as a supervisor for Standard Oil. Mrs. Byerly was an alumni of Yucaipa High School, where she was a varsity cheerleader. Following high school, she continued her education as a music major at California State University, San Bernardino. In later life, she worked as a real estate agent. Mrs. Byerly pioneered the home schooling movement in California. She also served as a director and later as a commander for the AWANA Clubs organization. She coached the 1995 AWANA high school national championship Bible Quiz team. In recent years, Mrs. Byerly was active in both the Arrowhead Arts Auxiliary and the Republican Women organizations in Lake Arrowhead, CA. She served as a church pianist and played piano in the Rim of the World High School orchestra for that school s productions of The Music Man and The Wizard of Oz. Memorial Services will be held Sunday April 15th at 2:00 PM at Church On The Mountain, 1103 N State Highway 173, Lake Arrowhead, CA.
