Bethany Ruth (Hutchings) Scribner, formerly of Berrien Springs, died February 25, 2013, in Grand Terrace, California. Bethany was born August 25, 1923, in Glenwood, Michigan, the daughter of Charles A. Hutchings and Leita Irene (Underwood) Hutchings. She married Gordon R. Scribner, a mason contractor, on June 15, 1941, and he survives. She was a homemaker and had worked at the Broadview Academy where she was in charge of the laundry. She liked crocheting, making wedding cakes, and enjoyed cooking. The Scribners had four children: James G. Scribner, who preceded her in death; Janet I. Horn of Redlands, California; Kenneth L. Scribner of Niles; and Charles R. Scribner of Scottville, Michigan. Besides Gordon, her husband of 71-plus years, and her children, she is survived by one brother, Rene H. Hutchings of Statesville, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Bethany and Gordon had spent the last few years in an assisted living arrangement in Grand Terrace, California, near their daughter, Janet. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, at the Glenwood Seventh-day Adventist Church in Glenwood, Michigan. Visitation with the family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at the Allred Funeral Home in Berrien Springs. Burial will be in the South Wayne Cemetery in Cass County, Michigan.
