Betti Sherman

October 30, 1932 — February 27, 2020

Bettimae Lagather Sherman was born on October 30, 1932 to Michael and Dorothy Lagather in Superior, Wisconsin. She died on February 27th. She grew up in Chisolm and Bimidji, Minnesota and as a child sang, danced and won awards for her charm and talent. Betti was a cheerleader and graduated from Bimidji State University (BSU) in Minnesota in 1952 with two degrees; one in Physical Education and in Music. She also had a Minor in Biological Science and a concentration in English Literature. Betti and Ken Sherman were married in 1952 and enjoyed 58 happy years prior to his death in 2010. Their son Michael Scott pre-deceased both of them in 1977.
Betti taught Physical Education at Redlands High School from 1955 to 1958. She joined the PE Department at the University of Redlands in 1958 and retired as a Professor Emeritus in 1982. She was a very special professor to countless students who stayed in touch over the decades. During the years that Elderhostel groups came to the University, Betti taught aerobics to the senior visitors to the campus.
An avid golfer, Betti was an active member of the Redlands Womens Golf Association at Redlands Country Club for many years. She also loved to ski and travel. She was a founding member of the University of Redlands Faculty Club and a member of the April Morning Club. Betti served as a Kimberly Crest Trustee and docent for 12 years.
Ken and Betti established the Betti Lagather Sherman and Ken (Babe) Sherman Scholarship Endowment to be funded upon her death. The fund will support work study students in need of financial aid at BSU.
Betti is survived by her sisterhood of local pals: Cindy Andrews, Jo Dierdorff, Jeannie Gaylord, Monika Krebs, Dawn Romo and Natalie Kille, as well as her former colleague, Kathy Mohn and her childhood friend Marguerite Kause of Vienna, VA. They cannot thank the administrators and caregivers at Plymouth Village enough for the loving and wonderful care and support Betti received both at The Grove and The Village (Health Center) during the past year. At her request, no service will be held.
