Betty Jean Hemm of Yucaipa, California died November 24, 2013 at home. Betty was born in Ottumwa, Iowa on September 21, 1930 to James Henry Ancell and Helen Lucille Elliott. Betty married Darvin Fredrick Hemm on February 14, 1947 in Ottumwa, Iowa. They moved to California in 1952 and got their first home in Lakewood, California. They lived there until they moved to Glen Avon, California in 1956. They built their final home Yucaipa, in 1980. Betty loved to cook would make big meals and everyone was welcome at her table to join the family. Her pride was making a carrot cake that won a blue ribbon at the fair one year. Betty was also known for her sewing, making clothes for everyone and then on to making quilts. All her quilts are prized by anyone that got one from her. Betty loved children and loved being a mom to not only her six children but also to over 30 foster children. She felt that when they left they should have more than what they came with, so while the children would show up with all their worldly things in grocery bag, they always left with a small suitcase with more clothes and toys. She managed to keep in contact with some of the children and loved hearing from them. Family meant the world to Betty and always loved it when one would come and visit. She was the keeper of the family history and loved to write long letters to everyone she knew. At one time she thought of becoming a writer and if you could read her letters you would know she could have been a writer. She is survived by her husband of 66 years Darvin Hemm and her six children Danny Hemm, Kenneth Hemm, Susan Frymire, Randy Hemm, Timothy Hemm and Julie Williams. Brother James Ancell of Canby Or.
