Carol Flora Halliday Startup was born in Pleasant Grove Utah January 8th 1938 to the lives of
John and Flora Halliday. Her father was an accomplished music scholar, conductor, and teacher
of the fine art of music at BYU and fostered the love for both teaching and music into Carol
where she became an accomplished flutist and graduated from BYU alongside courting her
high-school love Elbert Gordon Startup. They married in 1959 and went on to grow a family
of seven children that grew into twenty-one grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. When she
wasn't in the home she valiantly raised the immediate family as a school teacher of various
grades. She spent nearly two decades teaching the second grade at Pleasant Grove
Elementary School until retirement.
She had a great love and natural grace when working with children and became a rock for
countless kid's lives throughout her career.
Carol found joy in the small places in life. She loved to bake and cook, especially for holidays
and family events. She was very frugal but found bursts of excitement to splurge with gathering
up the family for the periodic trip out for ice cream or a long-awaited out craving for a meal that
took her back to a good memory. She loved putting together picnics and spending time in Provo
Canyon or on short local road trips with her kids.
She continuously received great adoration for being giving, loving, and supportive through
service or just sweet, sound advice from naturally acquired friends and family. Carol carried
those sentiments with sturdy humility and quiet badges of honor.
Her strong yet soft and devout character always came off the solid platform of her love and faith
in God and ongoing example in Christ. She was a member of the /church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
We now lay Carol to rest at the wise and noble age of 86. She outlived at a young age her older
brother, two of her children, her husband, and many many friends but finally succumbed
after trying to triumph over congenital heart failure.
She peacefully passed in her home, surrounded by on September 11th, 2024.
