David L. Simmons

David L. Simmons of Redlands passed away peacefully on November 18, 2023. He was 86 years old. He was born on 01-04-1937 in Springfield, MO to Clarence and Bertie Simmons who both preceded him in death. David was the oldest of 6 children all of which preceded him in death. He and his wife Gayla have been married 67 years. They met at church when he was 16 years old and she was 14 years old. They were married on June 17, 1956, in Missouri. David and Gayla enjoyed a Hawaiian Cruise to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. For their 65th wedding anniversary the family gathered for a big celebration.

David and Gayla have 4 children, Robin Gotta (Alan), Susan Grove (Lyndon), Steven Simmons and Michael Simmons (Kimra). The 3 oldest of their children live in Redlands and Michael and his family live in Maryland. There are six grandchildren, Crystal, Kenny, Matt, Staci, Dave and Nick. He also enjoyed his 9 great-grandchildren.

In 1963 David moved his wife and kids to Redlands, California. It was then that he learned transmission repair. He lived in Redlands the rest of his life with many trips to Springfield, MO to visit his family there.

David was a hardworking man who owned many different businesses mainly in San Bernardino. He was a gifted mechanic. He even taught Transmission Repair at Valley College for a few years. Over the years at different times, he had an Aamco Transmissions, A Dyno Tune, a Mobile Gas station, Beamon’s Transmissions, Automart Radiator Shop, Western Farmlines Trucking and a Laundromat in Banning. He pursued many hobbies and interests such as stock car racing, bowling, fishing, boating, trap shooting, gold mining and he loved to read. His favorite sports were Nascar Races and Boxing. He was a Golden Glove Boxer in his younger years. He was an excellent storyteller and a bit of a jokester. His kids loved to sit and listen to his tales after his adventures. For his 80th birthday his kids took him to Jackson Hole, WY, which was on his bucket list.
