Dennis E. Kottmeier, 80, of Mentone, California, died on Sunday, May 12, 2024, with Jacque, his devoted wife of 60 years, by his side.
Dennis was a dedicated husband and father, the patriarch of the Kottmeier family, and a talented trial lawyer and orator, known for his commanding voice. Whether he was convincing a jury of the facts of a case, telling a great story, inspiring his childrens’ youth soccer while dressed as Darth Vader, or leading his large family in prayer, Dennis had the gift of a strong presence and a way with words.
Dennis served the County of San Bernardino for 25 years as a prosecutor, including 15 years as District Attorney, where he litigated over 40 high profile felony trials, and was recognized in the United States Congress for his service to the community. He was educated at the University of Redlands (1966), and the University of California, Hastings College of Law (1969). He and Jacque settled in Mentone, where they spent many decades caring for their animals and fruit trees, and raising their children and grandchildren. Dennis also enjoyed reading and collecting Abraham Lincoln memorabilia.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Jacqueline M. Kottmeier, his sister Marlene (Mike) Gust, his children Shawn (Diane) Kottmeier, Sasha (Wendy) Kottmeier, Shyla (David) Brewster, and Shaney (Chris) Carr, as well as 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Archibald Kottmeier and Virginia (Elliott) Kottmeier, and his grandson Hunter.
A service to honor Dennis's life will be held on Saturday, June 8th, at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 12449 California Street, Yucaipa, California. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made by check to Faith Lutheran Church Yucaipa, in memory of Dennis E. Kottmeier.
