Eamonn Thomas Francis McGloin—husband, father, youth coach, troop leader and friend—passed away at his Redlands home on October 22. He was 63.
Eamonn was born October 9, 1961, in Redwood City, California, to Irish immigrants Eamonn Anthony McGloin and Jane McGloin, née Daly.
Eamonn was proud to have started work in middle school, as a paperboy for the Redwood City Tribune. He would say his job gave him an early start on character judgment, accounting and sales. Eamonn picked up a range of jobs while studying at St Francis High School. He enjoyed biking to a circuit factory in the early morning, and later worked as a valet, busboy, waiter, barback and golf caddy at Menlo Country Club. There he met stars, diplomats and businessmen.
He studied at University of San Diego, where he made life-long friends. After two years, he transferred to California State University San Diego and graduated in 1983 with a major in finance and a minor in English. While in college, he spent a semester at Oxford and backpacked across Europe for three months, furthering a love for travel. He also worked as a university writing tutor, a KPBS disc jockey, and, for a summer, an Alaskan fish packer.
After college, he became an insurance agent at Travelers Insurance. His off-time was spent running on the beach and golfing. A random golf pairing convinced him to volunteer at the Old Globe Theatre. There, he met with his future wife, Candace Cantú. The two married in 1991, at the University of San Diego’s Founders Chapel.
In 1990, Eamonn moved to Redlands to work as a loan officer at Redlands Federal Bank. Candace and Eamonn fell in love with Redlands and decided to stay to raise their family: Devin, born in 1995; Aidan, born in 1997; and Brendan, born in 2001.
As a loan officer, Eamonn took care of his clients. His dedication to do right by them built a network so extensive that he would proudly point out a past client to his sons while driving around town. “I did a loan for that guy!” became his unofficial catchphrase with his sons.
As a father, Eamonn encouraged every interest his children had. He coached each of his son’s soccer teams at least once, a role he said was his favorite part of being a parent.
As a parishioner of St. Adelaide’s Catholic Church, Eamonn co-chaired the St. Adelaide Building Committee, and took pride in overseeing the construction of a new meeting hall.
As Committee Chair for Boy Scout Troop 11, he worked to improve the troop’s scholarship fund, so more scouts could afford to go to college. Eamonn also focused an effort to take the troop on more long-distance backpacking trips, including to Kings Canyon, Yosemite National Park and Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
As a traveler, it was important to maintain strong ties with his Irish family and enjoyed multiple trips to Ireland. He enjoyed three road trips across the United States with visits to 13 national parks.
In 2018, Eamonn was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He pursued cutting-edge treatments at The City of Hope with his characteristic “in it to win it” and “teamwork makes the dream work” attitude. His continued determination and will to live is an inspiration to those who knew him.
“My life was full of joy,” were his last words to his wife.
Eamonn is survived by his wife, Candace; sons, Devin, Aidan and Brendan; brother, Daniel; sister-in-law, Andrea; nieces, Annabelle, Grace and Catherine; and many cousins in Ireland, Australia, England and Canada.
Memorial donations can be mailed in Eamonn’s name to the Nicholas Chase Bornholdt Memorial Scholarship, C/o BSA Troop 11, 115 W Olive Ave., Redlands, CA 92373.
