Edward Donald Mccarthy

June 13, 1930 — June 3, 2016

Edward, Ed, D. McCarthy
Born June 13th 1930 in Tacoma, Washington
Passed on June 3rd 2016 in Yucaipa, California
Ed was born to Ira and Francis McCarthy. He is survived by his siblings: John, MaryAnn, Shirley, Ray (precious), and Patti (the baby). His oldest sister Eleanor, and half brother Chuck passed previously. He attended primary school locally, then went to Bellermine, a private Catholic high school. He had a natural athletic ability; playing football, baseball, boxing and some hockey. Later he attended 1 year of college in Montana.
Ed met his true love and high school sweetheart, Maxine Slusher, after stuffing snow down her boots to get her attention. Fortunately, this sparked the courtship which eventually led to marriage on October 13th 1951. They were both devote Catholics. Their strong faith has been passed along to their family. They had over sixty-five wonderful, eventful years together. Their family expanded to a total of 7 fabulous children, 5 boys and 2 girls; Sean, Keary, Kevin, Erin, Padraic, Darren and Rory. They moved from Washington in the early 1960s to Southern California, Orange County area. There was never a dull moment around the McCarthy house; playing sports with his kids, coaching or cheering. Ed loved family vacations; frequently visiting family and friends back up in Washington; Sunday drives to the beach; or spending quality time at the family cabin in Arrowbear, California. In his middle years he especially loved meeting up with friends and family in Las Vegas for St. Patrick’s Day. What a party! He was one for the craps tables.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving from 1951-1959, first in active service, and later the reserves. He was stationed in Okinawa during the Korean War. While away on active duty, Ed taught boxing and played some rowdy games of softball.
Ed was employed by the FAA as an air traffic controller for 30 years. He began this training while still in the USAF. His career took him from Boeing in Washington to Southern California via El Toro; he retired in 1982.  He later came out of retirement in 1985 to work as a supervisor in Palm Springs, California until 1990, when he retired again.
During the Vietnam conflict Ed and Max hosted a wonderful family, Phuc and Khanh Do and their 5 children; enabling their safe emigration from Vietnam. What a crazy, fun time. It was a blessing to both families. They’ve kept in touch over all these years.
He was a great patriarch. Ed offered his various construction talents to friends and family over the years which was always appreciated…or not! Favorite tools: duct tape and WD40. Favorite phrase: “Hey…you Turkey!” So many memories to be cherished and shared. Ed will be greatly missed, but will live on in our hearts. Family: 1+1=7, turns into 33, then 24 and counting, and 1 great-great for good measure. How do you like that math!?
A special thank you to Emmerson-Bartlett Memorial Chapel in Yucaipa, for the after care of our dearly departed.
