Edward Snow Windle

Edward Snow Windle, a resident of the Inland Empire for over sixty years, passed away in Redlands February 1, 2010. Born in Burkeville, Kentucky on May 7, 1924, Edward spent most of his youth growing up in Livingston, Tennessee. He attended ivingston Academy, and remained involved as a proud member of the Class of '42. On His seventeenth birthday, in 1941, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Thus placing him in active duty at age 17 before WWII had even begun. He fought bravely throughout WWII, and was decorated for Maritime Valor during war time. He was part of the 71st Airborne Aviation detail for the Aircraft Carrier USS Ranger, CV-4. Upon his death, it was previously arranged, that his wartime memorabilia detailing his journey as one of the youngest heroes of World War II will be on display at Florida State University. In the summer of 1944 he met Mary Lewis of Providence, Rhode Island. They were married on September 30th, 1944. They remained married for the rest of his life, celebrating their 65th Wedding Anniversary this past fall in Berkeley, CA. Edward was recognized by Knudsen Dairy Creamery in the early 1980's for over 30 years of exemplary service and work ethic, retiring from Knudsen in 1985. Past involvements include being a member of the Louisville, Kentucky American Legion, 50 year member San Bernardino Masonic Lodge, Alumni of the San Bernardino 20/30 Club, registered member of the First Families of Overton County, Tennessee, and part of the Historical Registry of Revolutionary War as well as Civil War descendents. It has been arranged to have his extensive collection of Civil War memorabilia donated to the Smiley Library. The Windles became involved with the USC Parent's Club in 1980. They have had season tickets since that time, and have attended every home game for the past 25 years (including this past season). Survivors include his wife of 65 years Mary Windle, daughter Gloria Moreland, son-in-law Keith Moreland, grandson Scott Moreland, and granddaughter Jenny Moreland. He is also survived by two sisters, Frances Jackson and Elizabeth Smith. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. A private family viewing will be held Friday, February 12th at 5:30pm at Emmerson Bartlett Memorial Chapel. The funeral will be graveside with Military honors in the Court of honor at Montecito Memorial Park at 1:30pm on Saturday, February, February 13th. Jonathan Jarboe of Pathway Church in Redlands will be officiating the Ceremony. Burial will be immediately afterwards inside the Court. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to "The Edward and Mary Windle Scholarship Fund" which will recognize yearly a deserving College bound senior at the Redlands High School Senior Awards Night.
