George K Monroe, 85, passed away in Redlands on January 31, 2012. He was born November 9, 1926 in Hannibal, Mo to Bessie and Ore Monroe and had three sisters: Kelly Wielder, Edith Brinkley and Goldie Monroe (all deceased.) He married his wife Carmen on May 23, 1960 in Riverside, Ca. He is survived by his Wife Carmen Monroe; Kenneth Monroe (son), Carl Alvarez (Grandson) and Patric Alvarez (great grandson). He was predeceased by his daughter Adair. During George Monroe s 30 years of volunteer work at Redlands Adult Education, he has received numerous awards for including the prestigest Certificate of Recognition by the California Legislature Assembly honored in 1992. In a featured article published about George Monroe in the Redlands Daily Facts, former Redlands Adult School Education Principal Cherry Bordelon stated The value he (George) places on education and his willingness to share that value is what makes him so special. George Monroe served in World War II in the U.S.Army and is a retired Master Sergeant of the U.S Air Force in 1976 last stationed at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, CA. A lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge in Redlands, CA as a Master and most recently served as Treasurer. He volunteered for many causes and programs including donating blood, working for the Census Bureau in 2000, the Redlands Joslyn Senior Center Chess Club, attended church regularly and most recently for the Literacy Program at Redlands A.K. Smiley Library. Memorial service will be held at Emmerson Bartlett Memorial Chapels 703 Brookside Ave., Redlands, CA 92373 (909) 793-2311 on Friday, February 3rd at 3:00 PM.
