Gilbert W. Ruhter

January 7, 1932 — November 24, 2014

Gilbert W. Ruhter was born December 7, 1932 in Monrovia, California. Raised in lower Yucaipa with his brother Vern and sister Roselie, Gilbert graduated from Redlands High School. After graduation, Gilbert struck out into the world to make his fortune. Having many job experiences over his lifetime, Gilbert drove a truck for the local granite quarry, delivered eggs for McAnnally poultry ranch, heavy equipment operator, lumber mill worker in Central Oregon, and even tried his had as a meat butcher. After marrying his wife Joan, in 1962, Gilbert made the decision to move his family from the cold, snowy winters of the High Sierras, to the warm and arid climate of Valley Center, California. There, he and his wife raised their family of three children, enjoyed the labor and fruits of a small ten acre ranch, and eventually retired as maintenance supervisor of Skyline Country Club. Gilbert moved back to Yucaipa in 2002 to provide support to his aged mother, Ella Althaus.
Gilbert was often reffered to as the “grouchy curmudgeon”, but those that knew him understood that the gruff exterior was only to protect a good and kind heart. He was fond of saying that “one had to be tough and resourceful to survive growing up in the Depression”.

Gilbert’s legacy is the strong moral values he passed on to his children and grandchildren, his love and devotion to his wife of 52 years, and his dedication to his family. Gilbert passed away peacefully, Monday, November 24, 2014 at Redlands Community Hospital. He is survived by his eldest brother Vern, Wife Joan, and children: Dawn, Leroy and Ralph. Memorial Services will be held Friday, December 5, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Emmerson Bartlett Memorial Chapel, 35208 Yucaipa Blvd., Yucaipa, CA 92399
