April 19, 1920 — June 20, 2016

It is with great sadness that the family of Gretchen Hartley Ghormley announces her passing on the Summer Solstice, under the Strawberry Moon, June 20, 2016. She was truly an amazing woman and mother. Mrs. Ghormley was born on April 19, 1920, in Everett, WA to David M. Hartley and Gretchen A. Smith, and was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenneth O. Ghormley, MD, her brother David M.C. Hartley and sister Sue H. Brown; Mrs. Ghormley is survived by her sister Janice H. Hartley of Minneapolis, many nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends.
Mrs. Ghormley leaves behind her two adoring and devoted sons, Barton Ghormley of Sonoma and Scott Ghormley of Laguna Beach.
Mrs. Ghormley graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in English from Whitman College, where she met her future husband Dr. Kenneth Ghormley. While at Whitman, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and various honor societies. Upon graduation, she enjoyed a career as a fashion copy writer in San Francisco and Boston, before marrying Dr. Ghormley on V J Day. After her husband’s medical residency at the Mayo Clinic, they moved to Redlands where Dr. Ghormley joined the Beaver Medical Clinic. In Redlands, Mrs. Ghormley was active in the RCH Art Foundation, the A. K. Smiley Library, the Redlands Family Service Association, the Assistance League, and Bonnes Meres. Throughout her life she was an inspiration to her sons, family and friends.
A memorial to her vital and meaningful life is being planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to are asked to make a donation to Redlands Family Service Association or the A.K. Smiley Library.
