August 4, 1929 – February 14, 2019 

Gwendolyn Morrison Hughes, 89, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2019, at her home in Redlands, Ca. with her daughter Kathy Hughes and son David Hughes by her side. She was on Hospice care for a short time prior to her passing, overseen by Redlands Community Hospital Hospice and their dedicated team. She was born in Chicago, Ill., on August 4, 1929.

Gwen is preceded in death by her (Paternal Grandparents); Jared Plummer Morrison and Anna Simpson Morrison, (Maternal Grandparents), Max and Maude Kanter, (Parent’s) Jared Plummer Morrison II and Alvira Kanter Morrison, (Step Mother) Doris Johnson Morrison, (Husband) Richard M. Hughes, (Brother) Guy Morrison, (Niece) Tanya LaFave and (Cousin) Alana Hornbeck.

Hughes is survived by her five children: Karen Hughes McLeod of Fort Collins, Colorado; Richard (Rick) M. Hughes Jr. of Palm Desert, California; David Hughes of New York City, New York; Peter Hughes (Shane Delavan) of Denver, Colorado; Kathy Hughes (Ron Paschall) of Redlands, California. Four Grandchildren: Heather McLeod Larrald (Luke) of Aurora, Colorado; Beth McLeod Johnston (Jeff) of Fort Collins, Colorado; Barry McLeod of Goose Creek, South Carolina; Brad McLeod of Fort Collins Colorado: Four Great Grandchildren: Maddie Larrald; Jack, Lilly and James Johnston;  her brother Jared (Jerry) Plummer Morrison III (Louise) of West Covina, Ca and their children Elise LaFave of West Covina, Ca; Jared Plummer Morrison IV(Laura and their five children) of Meridian, Idaho; Jeremy Morrison of West Covina, Ca; Cousin Matthew Hornbeck of Redlands, Ca. and many family members across the country.

Gwen received her basic nursing education at Hartford Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford, Conn., in 1950. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing in 1981 from California State University, San Bernardino and her master’s degree in community health nursing and parent-child nursing from Loma Linda University in 1984. She received the degree of doctor of public health in health education at Loma Linda University School of Public Health in 1991. Her doctoral dissertation was titled “Criteria for Determining the Effectiveness of Shelter Programs for Battered Women.” Hughes presented her dissertation research at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in New York City on October 1, 1990.
She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship Honor Society and Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society for Nursing.

She was a member of the Alumni Association at Cal State San Bernardino where she rejoined the nursing faculty department, having taught there in 1985-86.

She served on the board of directors of Bethlehem House, a shelter for abused and battered women and children, since its inception in 1985. She was a health education consultant in the areas of health of women, children and the family, and in domestic violence issues.
For many years she worked as an obstetrical nurse at Redlands Community Hospital and for Drs, A. Gordon Reynolds, William J. Spanos and Ryan Tolsma.

She worked for the Redlands Unified School District as a nursing instructor for Redlands Adult School, a health nurse for Special Education and was Director of Nursing at Plymouth Village Convalescent Hospital. 

Hughes enjoyed riding her horse Ming through the groves of Redlands with her friend Ellen Disparte, taking part in jumping competitions, scouting out trails in the San Bernardino Mountains with her friend Dr. Craig Wesson and riding pony express. One of her greatest bucket list achievements was riding on the moors in England. 

For nearly forty years she tended to her small orange grove, sharing her crops with family members, friends and local family services.

Gwen’s wishes were that her ashes be scattered along with her animal’s ashes, on the trails she once scouted. Mountain trail horses and their riders will escort Hughes on her final ride here on earth…

Services will be private. In Lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Gwen’s name to animal shelters and domestic violence shelters of one’s choosing…
