Herbert Neal Herb Rosenberg

Herbert (given Hebrew name "Hivey Nuchum") was born in Atlanta, Georgia on December 22, 1934 to parents Louis and Fannye Rosenberg. Herb had one brother, Allen, who was two years younger. Herb left us on the evening of November 8, 2015, at his home in Redlands, California.

He is survived by his wife Judith Rosenberg, 82, his daughters Julie Walter and Marsie Rosenberg Gutierrez, his sons Rick Rosenberg and Charlie Rosenberg, and his grandchildren Jeff Walter and Ella Rosenberg. He is preceded in death by his parents Louis and Fannye Rosenberg, and his brother Allen Rosenberg.

At an early age, Herb showed a proclivity for electronics and engineering, even building his own radios. By the age of 18, Herb began attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, where he later met his wife Judi, who was attending Emerson College in the same city. Herb graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1956 and married Judi the same month. Herb's engineering career took him to various locations across the country, working in a variety of capacities, including nuclear and aerospace engineering, contractual work for the United States military, and energy conservation projects. Herb and Judi had their first child, Julie, in Livermore, California. Herb then took a job in the Los Angeles area and the family settled in Reseda, California, where Marsie and Rick were born. In 1971, Herb took a new job at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, where the famiy then settled and their fourth child, Charlie was born.

In 1982, the family returned to California, this time in Redlands, a suburb of San Bernardino, where Herb took his next job with TRW at Norton Air Force Base. By the mid '90's, Herb had reinvented himself as a computer consultant and programmer with his own business, Herb's Computer Works, where he finished his career, work well into his 70's.

Herbert was a man of great intellect, many talents and assorted hobbies. He was a writer of fiction, and a scholar of many academic and spiritual subjects, including Jewish history, world history, philosophy, ancient Egypt, European classical music, Buddhism, and Taoism, to name a few. His family and friends often considered him "a walking encyclopedia", as Herb loved to give extensive academic lectures to all who were privileged to listen. Herb also wrote for school newspaper, was a member of the college fraternity Sigma Alpha Mu, and was a member of Chabad, the Jewish charity organization. Herb was also an ardent fan of sports, and followed the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Lakers loyally over many years.

But foremost, Herb was appreciated, and will be remembered by all that had the pleasure of knowing him, as a champion of the underprivileged, and a man of exceeding warmth, compassion, joviality, generosity, depth and gentleness.

A memorial service for Herbert will be held at the Congregation Emanu El, 1495 Ford Street, Redlands, California 92373 on November 19, 4:30 - 6:30. Flowers are welcome.
