Born November 27, 1923 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Helen Louise Spangle and Arthur Henry Welklin.
He passed away on January 8th, 2019 at the age of 95, in National City, California.
Howard attended Broadview Academy in Broadview, Illinois near Chicago, where he met his future wife Margaret Jean Slough, known by all as Peggy.
They dated 6 years during which time he attended Emmanuel Missionary College (now Andrews University) earning his B.A. in Religion/History. He and Peggy were married on June 2nd, l946 in Bryan, Ohio, and they were married over 70 years before Peggy passed away March 9th, 2017.
Howard was a Seventh Day Adventist minister for his career, which spanned 42 years pastoring over 27 churches across the United States including Indiana, Tennessee, Georgia, Washington and California. Including Pastoring the Redlands SDA Church from 1969 – 1974.
On August 29, l954 their only daughter Kandy Jo was born.
After Howard retired from pastoring churches in l988, he became Director of Prayer Ministries for It Is Written for the next two decades.
In l993, they moved back to San Diego to be near their only grandchild, Kaitlin Alexandra, and their daughter Kandy and her husband Rick Bartlett. They were members of the La Mesa Seventh Day Adventist church from l993 to present.
Howard is survived by his daughter Kandy Bartlett, granddaughter Kaitlin Wann, brothers Philip Welklin and Roger Welklin and 7 nephews and 6 nieces.
Howard spent his spare time working on the ancestry of the family going back several hundred years. He had a green thumb and infinite knowledge of gardening. He loved geography, history and traveling around the world. He loved their many dachshunds, coin collecting, reading, baking (killer sweet rolls), and spending time with granddaughter and family and friends, playing games with lots of laughter.
Howard’s infectious laugh was well known as well as his sense of humor. He had a sweet and thoughtful spirit, he was unselfish, caring, unassuming and a peacemaker. He studied hours preparing each sermon, never preaching the same sermon twice! His life impacted everyone he met in a positive way and he was loved by all.
He will be greatly missed.
The Graveside Service will be Friday, February 1, 2019 at 11:00 am at Singing Hills Memorial Park, 2800 Dehesa Rd, El Cajon, CA 92019.
