Isabel Garcia Shinn, a long time resident of Yucaipa, passed away at Redlands Community Hospital on April 1, 2011 at the age of 85. Isabel was born on July 8, 1925 in the bustling district of Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico. She came to the states at the tender age of 18 to attend Emmanuel Missionary College in Michigan. From Michigan, Isabel s life journey continued to Milwaukee, then Denver until eventually it led her to Southern California. Her working resume included being a trainer and model for Vic Tanny's Health Club, a secretary for the Federal government, a lab technician for Loma Linda University, and a medical transcriptionist for Bio Laboratories. Retiring to Yucaipa in the early 70's, she continued to stay very active. An ardent craftswoman, her hands were always busy with crocheting, tatting, and needlepoint, creating beautiful gifts for family and friends. Also, with the help of her son Vernon, she learned how to use a computer, and put it to good use, translating Bible texts from English to Spanish for the local Braille Institute. Though small in stature, Isabel was big of heart. An animated storyteller and generous friend, she was loved and cherished by us all. Isabel, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend is survived by her two sons, Jim and Vernon Jr., her grandchildren Ryan and Courtney, and her loving cousins Ray and Glenn in New York. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 10 at 3:00 p.m. at the Emmerson - Bartlett Memorial Chapel 35208 Yucaipa Blvd. Yucaipa, CA 92399 A private interment will occur at a later date at Riverside National Cemetery.
