Janka Grose, born March 3, 1922 in Szentgyrgy, Hungary, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the age of 97. She attended university in Budapest. Janka at age 27, along with her mother, fled the Red Armys advancement into Hungary. As a refugee hoping for a new life in America she was granted placement to Canada where she worked as a nanny and learned English. Janka met and married Raymond R. Grose and eventually moved to his hometown of Banning, California where she raised her family and lived for the past 68 years. A prolific quilter, Janka was a founding and lifetime member of the Pass Patchers Quilt Guild.
Janka was predeceased by her parents, Gregor and Susanna Brugger; her two brothers, Karly and Frigyes, and her sister Leopoldina. She is survived by her six children: Karl (Katalin), Susanne, Frederick, Magda (Ron), Gregory, and Judy (Jeff); seven grandchildren: Zoltan (Debra), Tibor (Naomi), Matthew, Jeffrey, Colby (Carlie), Emily, and Abby; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and their families in Hungary.
The memorial service, with a reception following, will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 17 at Grace Lutheran Church, 1000 West Wilson Street, Banning, CA 92220. In lieu of flowers the family would like memorial gifts, if any, specified to Grace Lutheran Church.
