Jon Walter Scharer

July 28, 1934 –April 10, 2024

Jon Scharer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law and uncle went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. He leaves his wife, Juley; two sons, Glendon; Darin and daughter-in-law, Alicia; and three grandsons, Kori,Max, and Jason.

Jon taught eight years as an elementary and junior high school educator in Arcadia Unified School District, working an additional year as an elementary administrator there before coming to Redlands in 1965. In Redlands, he opened Mariposa Elementary School and served as the principal there for Redlands Unified School District (RUSD). From there he became the Director of Curriculum in the central office of RUSD for two years. His most satisfying years followed when he was involved with students as principal at Moore Middle School (then called Moore Jr.High School) for nine years, and then as principal of Clement Jr. High School for five years.

Following this time in Redlands, his work continued in San Bernardino. There he was the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for San Bernardino County Schools for a period of 13 years until his retirement in 1993.While in this position, he also served as a member and chair of the California County School Administrators Area Six and chair of the California State Steering Committee for Curriculum Development and Publications

His kindness and interest in helping children succeed, and adults rise in their educational careers was a major part of his life. He never cared about credit for himself, but he felt strongly that those who had made it all possible should get the honors.

Over the years in Redlands, he served the community as a member of Rotary, receiving the Y Roy Coble Service to Youth Award. Other services included the Redlands YMCA Board, and the Redlands Presbyterian Play School Board. These were just a few of his interests in helping our community.

After retirement in 1993, Jon was active in his church and volunteered over 35 years in an anonymous support program for families having loved ones suffering from substance use disorder. He also served as chair on the World Service Board of this fellowship.

Jon always felt his love of family and friends and successes in life were gifts from God.

A Celebration of Life will be held June 1, 2024, Saturday, 1:00 PM at Trinity Church located at 1551 Reservoir Road, Redlands, California. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a church of your choice. Thank you from the family.
