Joyce Marie Evans McSorley was born on September 8, 1934, in Frackville,
Pennsylvania to Mary Agnus McGuire and John Evans. She was raised in Philadelphia
until her early teens. It was then when her father was diagnosed with black lung disease
and the family (Mom, Dad, brother Johnny Mike and Joyce) moved out to San Diego.
She attended Pacific Beach middle school and graduated from La Jolla high school. It
was in high school where she met her future husband, Kenneth Logan McSorley (Mac).
Ken and Joyce were married on February 13, 1954 in La Jolla and remained married for
60 years. They had 3 children--Steven Harold, David Kenneth and Michael Daniel.
Joyce continued with her education and received her Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate
degree all in Logistics Engineering. She became the Director of Logistics for Raytheon,
taught logistics at UCSD in La Jolla, was well known and a valuable Director in the
Engineering field. She worked for various Engineering companies in San Diego
including General Dynamics Convair, Teledyne, Linkabit, SAIC, and Raytheon, from
where she retired.
Joyce was a devoted Catholic and was one of the founding members of St. Mary
Magdalene's church in San Diego (Clairemont).
Joyce had many hobbies. Among them were making her special potato candy at
Christmas, reading, bowling, square dancing, clogging, motor home travels, sewing,
crocheting, traveling (China and Japan) and cruising. Between 1979 and 2013 she had
taken 28 cruises together with family and friends to different ports, including Hawaii,
Alaska and the Panama Canal.
In her later years, she moved to Redlands to live with her middle son David and
daughter-in-law Darlene. She loved the view of the mountains from her new home. She
enjoyed leaving the house for rides, shopping, eating out, and viewing the sites.
She had many enduring qualities: loving, kind, thoughtful, a leader, strong, humble,
supportive, generous, and always welcoming.
