Joyce Isobel Penrose

June 23, 1930 — September 29, 2024

Costa Mesa

Joyce Penrose passed away on September 29th, 2024 at the age of 94. She died at her home amidst the glow of a beautiful sunset, surrounded by loved ones. Joyce was a long-time resident of Yucaipa.

Joyce was born in the city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec, Canada. The middle child of Basil and Marion McCoubrey, she was a loving sister to her siblings Bill and Shirley.

Joyce received her R.N. degree from Montreal General Hospital, and went on to work in every aspect of hospital care throughout her life, retiring in 1992 from Redlands Community Hospital. She was remembered at her retirement party for her sense of humor and her warm, caring attitude.

Joyce wed Jim Penrose in 1954. They went on to have four children together, relocating to California in 1956. Joyce is preceded in death by her beloved husband (after 66 years of marriage), their daughter Catherine, and her siblings Shirley and Bill. She is survived and mourned by her three children, Jim, Dan and Eleanor, her four grandchildren Chase, Andrew, Avalon, and Kelsey, and her four great-grandchildren, Harper, Leo, Royce and Eleanor Joyce. Joyce was also a loving mother-in-law, step-grandparent, and step-great-grandparent.

Joyce was active in her retirement as a volunteer in the community, including time devoted to neighborhood activities, hospice care, the Yucaipa Library, and the Mousley Museum. She was an avid reader, gardener, and prolific writer of poetry, having been a member of the Yucaipa Poets for years. Several of her poems were published in the Yucaipa News Mirror. Her poem subjects ranged from everyday life occurrences (“Putting out the Trash at Ten”) to the importance of environmental awareness (“How to Care for your Earth”). Her wise observations, often sprinkled with her dry wit, are a wonderful gift she leaves behind.

Joyce will be dearly missed by all those who loved her. As much as she loved flowers, and especially roses, her family asks that in lieu of those, these words from one of her poems be remembered and practiced in her honor: “Let us prize the love we share, and spread good feeling everywhere”.
