Our mom was born on a farm in Malcolm, Nebraska. Her grandfather was a German immigrant and her Grandmother was an immigrant from the Netherlands. Her heritage of German and Dutch descent gave her a strong will like we have never seen from another person. This strong will is what gave her the ability to raise six children, keep them out of trouble and accomplish getting them all through high school. Although loving and kind, it also was the personality that we didn't want to come up against while growing up which made her children become creative if we wanted to pull anything over on her. This strength was passed on to her children and helped us to become leaders in our professions.
She devoted herself to her children throughout the years, even becoming the PTA secretary and president. She enjoyed time with her children rather it was just visiting with them or having lunch at a favorite restaurant. She had a memory better than most and never missed sending a birthday card or Christmas present to each of her children, their spouses and her grandchildren. She continued this throughout her life even though our family became larger and larger.
We all have many memories of her from camping and fishing trips, including her picking up and carrying a duck that was following her. One trip to Yellowstone with her son and daughter n law included spotting a grizzly bear. In her excitement to get a closer look she tripped and fell on her face, jumped up and with grass on her face, her glasses on crooked ,hurried on to get a better look at the bear. She loved going on vacation and one of her favorite memories was visiting Butchart Gardens in British Columbia
She loved family pictures and had fond memories of growing up on the farm. She shared those Stories with her children as well as one of her favorite pictures which was a picture of one of her sons at 2 years old on the farm with a cigar in his mouth.
Sometimes she would chuckle and we would ask what's funny mom? She would say remember when we were at the Special Olympics World games in Reno and I rode in that hot air balloon and then I couldn't get out of it. She was always willing to do anything with her children even Christmas shopping for 12 hours. For all of us, one of our best memories was her homemade chicken and noodles. She would let us know when she was making them and none of us wanted to miss that meal. She has given that recipe to each of us, however it will never be the same as it was at her table.
Mom loved the Lord and it was a special time for her children when they had the opportunity to tuck her in bed at night, read her scripture, kneel by her bed, hold her hand and pray with her. The peace that came over her face after this will forever be embedded in our minds and hearts.
