Mary R. Hernandez

Mary R. Hernandez, longtime Redlands resident and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on Saturday, January 15 at the age of 86. Mary was born in San Bernardino, California on September 26, 1924 and lived in Los Angeles and San Bernardino as a child. She married Gene M. Hernandez in 1944 and together they raised four children: Marjorie, Teresa, Susan and Dennis. Mary raised her family in East Highland and in Redlands. After retirement from the Redlands Unified School District as a teacher assistant, she enjoyed traveling, visiting family and friends, caring for grandchildren and great-grandchildren, gardening, needlepoint and taking an occasional trip to the casino. Mary was active in the community and an active member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in East Highland, CA. Mary is survived by her children Teresa M. Avila of El Cajon, CA, Susan Welch of 29 Palms, CA, and Dennis F. Hernandez of Los Angeles, CA. She was preceded in death by her eldest daughter Marjorie (1970) and her husband Gene (1990). Grandma Mary was greatly loved by her grandchildren Eric Avila of Los Angeles, Christopher Avila of San Diego, Patrice Winn of Los Angeles, PJ Welch of 29 Palms, Gabrielle and Daniel Orum Hernandez of Los Angeles. She was greatly delighted to be a great-grandmother and she will be missed by her great-grandchildren Aidan and Ruby Winn, Eric and Ryan Avila, Isabella Welch and Zach Dunkin-Claire. Viewing will be Wednesday, January 19, 2011 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Emmerson Bartlett Mortuary, 703 Brookside Avenue, Redlands. A mass and services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at St. John Bosco Church, 28991 Merris Street, East Highland. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery in Redlands, California.
