Wanda Mae Hammons – Sarver, 78 of Mentone passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family. She was born in Howe, Oklahoma in 1940 to Odas and Pearl Cummings, she was the oldest of 4 children. Shad had so many good memories as a child. She started working at the age of 3 picking cotton with her mama and pepa. And she never quit working hard. She was a daddy’s girl, she told me she always strived to “be her best” to make her daddy proud. But as the end drew near, she wanted her mama.
She attended Redlands Sr. High, where she met and married Delton Hammons and together they had 5 children. That union ended in divorce 25 years later. She earned her high school diploma while she worked two jobs, night school, and had 5 kids.
In 1981 she met her husband. They headed out in a big-rig doing long haul trucking. She drove her fair share of miles and earned her own CB handle “smoking moose.”
She returned to Arkansas and went back to school earning her nursing degree. This was one of her proudest accomplishments. Missing her family in California, they relocated back to Mentone in 1985.
Wanda is survived by her husband of 36 years, Otha Sarver, her beloved dog Brandie, daughters Linda Gruver (Larry) of Redlands, Carold Soffel (Tom) of Mentone, Jackie Taylor (Ron) of Brookings, OR, her son, Ronnie Hammons, sister Nita Spence and Ms. Igg, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Odas and Pearl Cummings, brother Bobby, and sister Paddy. And her beloved son, Ricky Ray Hammons.
A viewing will be held June 22, 2018 from 8:30 am – 9:30 am at Emmerson Bartlett Memorial Chapel, Redlands, California. The graveside service will follow at 10:00 am at Hillside Memorial Park, Redlands, California.
