Bill was born in Takoma Park, Maryland on October 19, 1935. He spent much of his childhood in the Washington, DC area, West Virginia and Minnesota. He graduated from University of Minnesota Duluth, Kent State University, and earned his PhD from University of Oregon on a full fellowship. His most recent appointments were at Loma Linda University as Professor of Public Health and Preventative Medicine in the Schools of Dentistry and Medicine, and chaired the Health Sciences Department in the School of Allied Health. He was cofounder of Loma Linda Lopers, and founder and president of the National Council Against Health Fraud. He was involved in extensive media work on TV and radio, teaching consumers to beware of health quacks, and was often keynote speaker at professional conferences. He authored numerous articles, mainly on consumer health fraud, and co-authored The Health Robbers, the text book Consumer Health:A Guide to Intelligent Decisions, and authored Quackery and You. His passions were tennis which he was playing when he suffered his stroke on the court, running, railroad history and modeling, Green Bay Packers, and spending time with his family at the family’s vacation home in Revelstoke, BC.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Ada, of 53 years; his two sons, Will (Kerry), and Matt (Amanda); sister Janet Hanf and five nephews.
